| ENGLISH DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT |
The Global Leader Program English Department shares the overall mission of the GLP: to give students the critical thinking, reading, writing, research and debating skills necessary to compete, thrive and lead in a globalized information economy.
As in all the top college prep schools in the United States, we will focus on
reading entire works of literature, discussing them in a seminar-type atmosphere,
and writing about them at length and in depth. Basic skills such as grammar
practice, vocabulary building, college application essay writing and SAT practice
will receive specific attention-but will also develop as a natural function
of the rigorous study of literature. With small class sizes, individual student
attention-especially with regards to writing instruction-is paramount.
The literature chosen will span genres, time periods, and cultures. We will read novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and essays; we will read classics and contemporary works; we will read works from America, Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa; and we will write in a variety of genres: expository essays, argumentative essays, research papers, personal essays, creative non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. The courses and levels are differentiated primarily by the increasing complexity and sophistication in the writing we assign and in the books we read.
We in the English department believe the English classroom should be more than just a skills workshop. We hope to nurture in students a deep, lifelong appreciation and enjoyment of literary expression from all genres, from all cultures and countries. We believe the writing and reading of literature is a key tool for young men and women to grow into highly ethical, moral, humble and humane adult citizens with richly cultivated inner-lives. We want our students to have a strong sense of empathy for others, a healthy skepticism, a keen curiosity, and an undying sense of wonder.
