| SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT MISSION
STATEMENT |
The Global Leader Program¡¯s Social Studies Department comprises four areas: economics, history, geography, and politics. Each field pays special attention to and ensures that it is delivering instruction in accordance with the school¡¯s mission: to expose students to the rudiments of critical thinking through reading, writing, research, and debate. Our department offers students the opportunity to master levels in social studies through a variety of college-preparatory and advanced placement courses.
As in all the top college prep schools in America, our department will focus on students¡¯ ability to appreciate cultural and global diversity through courses such as World History, Economics, and Human Geography. Students will attend seminars in which they will be expected to write and discuss topical materials covered in the class. Students will learn to: 1) ask questions, 2) think logically, and 3) defend the results of their reasoning. In all, learning the basic skills of social studies is a process that requires a commitment to each discipline¡¯s methodology, to which students will be exposed. That said, our department does not promote passive learning. It is the department¡¯s goal to provide students with skills that will prepare them as active, informed global citizens who value acquiring knowledge as part and parcel of a productive life that is predicated upon leadership in a culturally diverse world. They will be armed with strong skills in critical thinking, problem solving, research, and communication.
As in all departments in the GLP, basic skills such as grammar practice, vocabulary building, college application essay writing and SAT/AP test practice will receive special attention. Each class in our Department will infuse SAT and AP prep as a part of the normal instructional delivery. In each field, writing will be strongly emphasized.
